High-capacity sterilization line for RTD coffee beverages

The global demand for ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages continues to grow rapidly, particularly in emerging markets where convenience products and long shelf life are key drivers. To respond to this demand, a major beverage producer in Saudi Arabia recently commissioned a fully automated processing line designed specifically for milk-based coffee drinks packaged in cans.

The project involved the installation of a new production facility equipped with high-capacity thermal processing technology capable of ensuring both product safety and consistent quality at industrial scale.

A new high-performance sterilization installation

At the core of the project is a sterilization system composed of six Surdry retorts, integrated into a fully automated production environment.

The installation was designed to support a production capacity of approximately 54,000 cans per hour, positioning the facility among the highest-capacity RTD beverage processing lines in the region.

Beyond the number of retorts installed, the key challenge of the project was system integration. The autoclaves were engineered to:

  • Operate as part of a coordinated and automated line.
  • Ensure smooth product flow.
  • Provide synchronized cycle management.
  • Require minimal manual intervention.

Process design for speed and uniformity

Processing milk-based beverages presents specific technical challenges. Products containing proteins and sugars are sensitive to excessive thermal exposure, which can lead to quality degradation such as flavor changes or color alterations.

For this reason, the autoclaves were specifically configured to achieve fast heating, precise temperature control and highly uniform heat distribution throughout the load.

Energy efficiency through heat recovery

In addition to productivity and process control, the project placed strong emphasis on energy efficiency.

The line incorporates Surdry’s RecN energy recovery system, which captures and reuses heat generated during the sterilization cycles. By recovering thermal energy that would otherwise be lost, the system significantly reduces the overall steam consumption of the installation.

A benchmark installation for high-volume beverage processing

The successful implementation of this project demonstrates how advanced retort design, combined with high-level automation and energy recovery technologies, can deliver both productivity and efficiency in modern food and beverage plants.

With its ability to process tens of thousands of cans per hour while maintaining strict thermal control, this installation represents a strong example of how industrial sterilization technology continues to evolve to meet the demands of large-scale beverage production.
